REPORT TO: Medical Director
RESPONSIBLE FOR: Pharmaceutical services of the hospital
LIAISES WITH: Patients and Patients and their families, Pharmacy personnel physicians,
Dentists and nurses for clarification on specific medication prescriptions/orders and Ancillary personnel, Medical Director, Quality Coordinator, and Heads of all departments and Staff.
Overall in charge and responsibility of selecting, procuring medications for hospital, storing, distributing, preparing, dispensing, administering, documenting and monitoring of medical therapies in the hospital.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provides guidance and direction in the coordination of pharmacy services division’s major functions and activities in order to maintain proper professional and administrative procedures as required by and to satisfy JCI, HAAD, International Patient Safety goal standards and the UAE Government’s rules and regulations.
Participates as the medical authority on pharmaceuticals in the planning and implementation of integrated preventive-curative medical care programs and medical therapies.
Is a prominent member of the Pharmaceutics and Therapeutics Committee and contributes significantly to its stated functions.
Incumbent has the principal responsibility for assuring the organizations compliance and adherence to the UAE government’s law, regulations, directives, and Ministerial decisions as directly related to pharmaceuticals, narcotics, controlled and psychotropic drugs.
To identify noxious drugs and perform their subsequent safer drug replacement and supervising the correct dosage and administration of drug therapies
To ensure sterile compounding of intravenous administration is done under aseptic technique
To train new pharmacist to follow aseptic technique during IV admixture
To observe the staff compliance with aseptic technique during the preparation of IV admixture
Attending the multidisciplinary care staff meetings and medical teaching programs as well as participating in rounds with other discipline teams.
Serves as primary liaison/consultant for all Pharmacy Services activities as related to the UAE Government and organizations
Has full responsibility for the overall maintenance of adequate supplies and in-house preparations (manufacturing/packaging), proper control and expeditious dispensing of pharmaceuticals for inpatients, through direct management of all.
This includes the establishment of specifications for the procurement of all approved drugs and those chemicals and biological as related to pharmacy practice and for the development and maintenance of written policies and procedures pertaining to appropriate drug control, storage, preparation, dispensation and administration though Pharmacy Services drug distribution systems.
Replying to all official letters related to the pharmacy and its practice and to be legally responsible among monitoring authorities regarding pharmacy practice.
Reviews pharmacy records, stock level inventories, controlled drug usage. Provides drug monitoring services which include establishing and maintaining patient drug profile records.
Advise physicians on equivalent or substitute drugs. Available to the entire staff, physicians and nurses, to answer their questions on pharmaceuticals and the compounding of special prescriptions.
Assures drug preparation/dispensation areas throughout the hospital are devoid of all outdated or otherwise unusable drugs by frequent inspection of nursing drug cabinets, emergency trays and crash carts.
Monitors pharmaceutical and other established indicators to ensure ongoing quality assurance.
Strictly observes organizations medical regulations and policies especially those related to infection control, patient safety, patient assessment and patient care.
Plans and maintains daily work schedules necessary for required performance of all department functions, including leaves of absence, vacations, holiday and weekend schedules, and emergency on-call schedule after working hours.
Reports to and receives administrative guidance from Medical Director.
Assigning working hours for pharmacy employees.
Ensuring proper management of near expiry drugs.
Ensure medicines are dispensed to patients after checking and counseling.
Calling physicians to clarify a prescription when in doubt.
Answering all patients’ questions.
Ensure compounding of medications follow standard protocols.
Supervising all pharmacy employees and trainees.
Performs other miscellaneous duties as requested by the Medical Director.
Comply with all OSH and infection control policies, standards and procedures and cooperate with hospital management to comply those requirements
Work accordance with the documented OSH procedures and instructions, specific responsibilities
Be familiar with emergency and evacuation procedures
Notifying OSH Hazards, incidents, Near misses and issues and assistance with the preparation of risk assessments, incident reports
Comply with Waste management procedures and policies
Attend applicable OSH/Infection control training programs, mock drills and awareness programs
Use of appropriate personal protective equipment and safety systems
Ensure presence of licensee pharmacist in pharmacy all the time.
Monitor medication dispensing at approved prices.
Ensure control, semi control, Narcotics drugs are prepared and dispensed as per HAAD/ DOH guidelines.
Schedule monthly medication room/crash carts checking and ensure all staff are complying with this.
QUALIFICATION, LICENSURE, EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, SPECIAL SKILLS:
Successfully completed and holds an accredited recognized BSc. in Pharmacy.
Holds a current and valid license to practice as a Pharmacist in home country.
Must have HAAD License to practice in Abu Dhabi, UAE.
More than 5 years’ experience with 3 years in administrative position
Excellent command of oral and written English.
Must have a thorough knowledge of medical ethics
